Narrabri Airport
Overview
Location: Narrabri, NSWLength: 5.5km
Application: Aerodrome Fencing
The Client
The Narrabri Aerodrome, serving as a critical hub for air traffic in New South Wales, required an upgraded fencing solution to enhance perimeter security and ensure safety for both aircraft and personnel. This aerodrome is essential for regional connectivity, handling both commercial and private flights.
The Challenge
With the increasing use of the aerodrome, there was a pressing need to bolster its security to meet regulatory standards and manage wildlife hazards, which are a common concern at rural airports. The existing fencing was inadequate, posing risks of wildlife entering the runway areas and potentially causing serious accidents.
The Solution
Southern Wire stepped in to provide a comprehensive fencing solution specifically designed for aerodrome security. The project involved the installation of 5.5 kilometers of high-security fencing, tailored to meet the specific needs of Narrabri Aerodrome. The custom-designed 17/180/15 Fastlock with a 30cm Barbed Hinged Apron and 240cm galvanised star pickets now successfully prevents kangaroos and other wildlife from entering the runway area, aligning with CASA regulations and securing funding through the Regional Airports Funding Program. The project included:
- High-Durability Fencing Materials: Utilizing robust, corrosion-resistant wires capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions and the intense daily demands of airport operations.
- Wildlife Deterrent Features: The fence included design elements to prevent animals from burrowing under or climbing over, thereby significantly reducing the risk of wildlife-related disruptions.
- Customized Height Specifications: To enhance security against unauthorized entries and exits, the fence was built to a height that complies with aviation security standards, ensuring comprehensive coverage around the perimeter.
The Implementation
The installation of the aerodrome fencing was planned meticulously to minimize disruption to airport operations. Southern Wire coordinated closely with Narrabri Aerodrome authorities to implement the project efficiently and within a tight timeframe, ensuring that all safety and security measures were in place as quickly as possible.
The Result
The new fencing system at Narrabri Aerodrome has dramatically improved the site's security, effectively deterring wildlife from entering the runway areas and enhancing overall safety for air traffic. The aerodrome now meets the updated security regulations required for Australian airports, providing peace of mind to the operators and the communities they serve.
